About the Artist
Deborah Etheredge
Exploring the quiet beauty of nature through traditional oil painting techniques.
Deborah’s art journey has unfolded almost in reverse, starting as a young abstract expressionist before moving through cubism and eventually embracing contemporary realism. She won her first art prize at age 5 in a primary school book cover competition, later earning the high school art medal four times and top honors in the under-21 category at a local art show in Queensland, Australia. After earning degrees in graphic design and studio arts, with a focus on printmaking and photography, Deborah’s design career took her across Australia, Singapore, and the USA. In 2022, she moved to Tennessee, where she now dedicates herself fully to her art, drawing inspiration from the landscapes reminiscent of her Queensland childhood.
Deborah’s work is deliberate and contemplative, aiming to evoke quiet moments of reflection. She finds beauty in the subtle shift of color, the play of light, or the curl of a fall leaf, offering a respite from the overstimulation of modern life. Influenced by the tonalists, Giorgio Morandi, Andrew Wyeth, and photographers like Edward Weston and Karl Blossfeldt, she often selects subjects from plants she has grown herself. Using historical pigments and traditional oil painting techniques, Deborah strives to create a visual symphony of nature's passage through time, offering a connection to the physical world through her work.
